I still find it hard to believe that the person Sweetie [his wife, Sana, 27], who wrote such wonderful things to me on the internet, is actually the woman I married and who has not said a nice word to me for years."

Other couples, though, did better online, including singer James Blunt who "sold his sister on ebay". He explained to British GQ : "My sister was crying because she couldn't get to a funeral in Ireland. Planes were on strike, the ferry was out of season and there were no trains. I whacked it on ebay: 'Damsel in distress seeks knight in shining armour to get to a funeral in Ireland. Please help!' The guy who won had a helicopter. "That was three years ago. They're getting married this summer."

Then there was the Australian photographer who gave his girlfriend a gift-wrapped house for Valentine's Day.

Bounceback players: Furcal leads the way

Basically, everything Lugo hit went right at someone, and that's the biggest reason why his batting average dropped to a career low .237. Look for a rebound to his normal .270-plus average this year with at least 30 steals. Lugo's not exactly Jose Reyes, but as long as he doesn't bat like Mario Mendoza again, he can help you.

Nick Swisher, OF, White Sox

I don't really know what happened to Swisher last year. After a 35-homer, 95-RBI and 106-run breakout in 2006, Swisher slumped to 22-84-78 last season. But maybe, just maybe, last year was the fluke.

While Swisher's home run total took a nosedive, his extra-base total stayed nearly the same (71 in 2006, 69 in 2007). His walk rate also held steady, and he struck out 21 less times in 17 fewer at bats. With such a young guy having such an inexplicable decline, I'm willing to chalk it up as an aberration.

The Chronicle Local News Blog

Henry K. Lee is liveblogging the Hans Reiser murder trial. See all his Chronicle articles on the case here and all his blog entries here.

4 p.m. Hans Reiser has finished his third day on the stand. We won't be back in session until Monday, March 17 (St. Patrick's Day) because of Judge Larry Goodman's previously scheduled vacation. The judge wished the jurors well and gave his standard admonition for them to avoid all media accounts and to not conduct any independent investigations.

Until then, check out the blog of former Alameda County Public Defender Jay Gaskill, with detailed legal analysis of the case, David Kravets' Wired reports on the trial and TruTV's (formerly CourtTV) "In Session" discussions about the case.

2:13 p.m. Judge Larry Goodman welcomed the jury back from lunch.

Not a movie-script ending, but a feel-good story nonetheless

Q: I heard that there was a "Hoosiers" type school in the 1B boys tournament last week in Yakima. Tell me about it.

A: Fun story but it doesn't have a magical ending. No player named Jimmy said, "I'll make it" in the huddle in the final minute of the title game.

In fact, tiny North River High School was eliminated after two games, but just getting to the tournament was a feel-good accomplishment that makes you smile.

North River has 24 students in grades 9-12 and a backwoods location about 25 miles southeast of Aberdeen in Brooklyn, Pacific County.

North River suspended varsity basketball for boys and girls in the 1970s until the 2004-05 season because its teams were outmanned. The Mustangs made do with a schedule against JV and sophomore teams.

HD DVD May Finally Be Dead... Only Three Years Too Late

Then there was MiniDisc, the DVD Recorder, XM Radio. So it's great to see Sony making it's way back at the helm again. I read something about Apple possibly buying Sony. My advice: Go for it.

My only ask is that you bring Carl Yankowski back on board to oversee the Operations Side of the house. Assuming he wants it, that is.

All I'll say is that I can still barely stream YouTube videos on my crappy dsl connection, and when I do I have to stop whatever else I'm doing online until it finishes downloading. While I agree that Internet video is in the future, both the delivery capacity and, more importantly, the mindsets of people who want to own something physical have to change before the optical disc format has to worry.

Sun backs Web 2.0 startups

Sun Microsystems has put its weight behind up and coming web 2.0 companies with the launched this week of a new initiative designed to provide UK startups with discounts on Sun technology and services.

The Sun Startup Essentials programme, which was originally launched in the States, will help eligible companies purchase a range of discounted products and services, including Sun Fire x64 servers and Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads technology, according to the firm.

Startups under the scheme can also rent discounted web hosting infrastructure from Sun partners Layered Technologies, NaviSite and NTT Europe Online, and gain access to free open source software including Sun's own.

"They will also get free technical support – the idea is to help startups make good decisions up front so as their needs go up they can sustain higher traffic," said Sun's Juan Carlos Soto.

Music you will love

Some exciting stuff on the music front.

The B-52s album "Funplex" just landed over my transom and I have to say, I'm feeling it. But I'm sort of prejudiced; I've always liked them. I will never forget that party I was at in Manhattan at the Hammerstein Ballroom -- who can remember what it was exactly? -- when the kind sponsors pumped everyone full off free drinks for like two hours and then, surprise...opened the curtains to reveal the B-52s, who put on this incredible, mind-blowing performance complete with stilt walkers and people in inflatable costumes. It was amaaaazing. Anyway the album is cool…rock oriented with touches of electro and punk.

Also, Natasha Bedingfield came out today. (Her album, that is. She did not announce that she is a lesbian.) I was dying to hear the track she did with Norfolk alum Danja (#13) because I was in the studio in LA when they made it. It's called "Not Givin' Up." Watching them collaborate was so cool...for the first 40 minutes.

Black, white and Greene

Just waiting for a great script to come over the transom is a very lonely experience. The results will be sporadic at best because there just aren't that many great scripts being written."

Cheadle always felt there was a story worth developing in Petey Greene. He was introduced to the DJ's expansive exploits by director Ted Demme (Blow), who pursued the idea before his unexpected death in 2002. "It was a difficult one to get made," Cheadle says, "but it's one of the movies that I've done that I'm proud of and happy with. I just wish many more people had seen it here in America."

A former drug addict and armed robber, Petey Greene emerged from jail in 1965 with a desire to pursue a career as a radio personality, having turned the PA system at the Lorton Reformatory into a one-man station that broadcast to the prison populace.

Microsoft offers confusing viewpoints on SaaS

Microsoft is making a concerted effort to move itself towards a software-as-a-service model, Microsoft Subnet blogger Mitchell Ashley believes, "But lets face it. Microsoft has a long, long way to go," he says. Part of the problem is that Microsoft seems unwilling to acknowledge that the Linux platform (and to some extent, the Google cloud) is where so much of the SaaS action is today.

Ashley conducted a candid interview with Michael van Dijken, head of Microsoft's marketing efforts in the hosting and communications sectors while at the SaaS Summit 2008 conference in San Francisco. (Ashley posted a "micro-interview podcast" of the meeting in his "Converging on Microsoft" blog.). van Dijken works with network providers, media and entertainment companies, and service providers/hosted services.

Hooper cautious over ground share

Chippenham Town chairman Derek Hooper says a potential groundshare between the Bluebirds and Trowbridge Town is far from agreed.

Hellenic League Division One West outfit Trowbridge are looking for a new temporary home while they build a new stadium on Bradley Road in the town.

They are waiting for planning permission from West Wiltshire District Council and will need a home for two seasons.

But Hooper has distanced himself from any speculation about an agreement, despite Trowbridge hosting Cheltenham Saracens at Hardenhuish Park on Saturday.

"It is a long way from being anywhere near tied up," said Hooper.

"It is still in the melting pot because the two leagues have got to agree it, the Wiltshire FA have got to agree it and, at the moment, the Wilts FA are not looking terribly hopeful."
