Dialtone’s Unlikely Arc

Someday, Alvaro Albarracin may step back and smile when he thinks about how he guided his company through the dot-com implosion of the past two years. Of course, that would require looking back, and Mr. Albarracin prefers looking ahead. He is already focused on the next move for Dialtone Internet Inc., the privately held company he founded in 1998. We want to be the number 1 managed hosting provider in the world, says the 33-year-old entrepreneur. Wed like to merge with or acquire other companies so we can scale faster. That may sound like a tall order for a company that grossed $7.9 million in sales last year, but given Mr. Albarracins track record, it could well prove achievable. He started his company as a one-man virtual Web-hosting firm in the bedroom of his home in suburban Miami. He and his wife, Madelyn, and their two young children had just moved into a four-bedroom home, and he convinced her that the extra bedroom could be an office.

Teachers leave Houghton for classrooms on Alaskan island

Literally it is right in the middle, but it's also where people go for their recreation," Nikki Lishinski said.

Movies are shown there. School carnivals are a big draw.

Sometimes, the school has Pizza Hut pizzas flown in for fund-raisers and these command hefty prices.

"People will pay $25 for a pizza, easily," Williams said.

Crowds come out for high school basketball games, too, though the Sea Parrots have to be creative to find opponents so far from the mainland.

"The high school basketball team will play the Coast Guard, they'll play the teachers," Steve Lishinski said.

The big rivalry is with the Seal Pups, the team from St. George.

"The competitive spirit is definitely there," Steve Lishinski said.

Notes following media briefing by Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad, Media ...

The Sudanese Army's area commander confirmed that it had been a Sudanese Armed Forces unit that had fired on the convoy.

Clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Justice and Equality Movement in West Darfur had also led to a number of civilian casualties and the relocation of 283 humanitarian staff from several locations in the state. On 29 December, the Justice and Equality Movement launched an attack on the local police station and Sudanese Armed Forces based in Seleia, a town north of El Geneina. While there were differing reports regarding the intensity of the conflict and casualties incurred, it had been confirmed that the Movement ultimately had taken control of the town.

The Justice and Equality Movement had seized the Government controlled towns of Sirba and Abu Suruj, which were also located north of Seleia.

It's still a Big Easy feast

A tiny woman sitting next to us at the bar was well on her way to polishing off both halves along with a bottle of Beck's that was preceded by a cocktail or two. Let's face it, New Orleans is not for teetotalers or strict adherents of a carb-free diet.

'Bar-muda Triangle'

After our Bywater hosts had polished off their share of the Domeliese's and Parasol's dividends, they suggested a crawl through some Bywater watering holes that are part of what's known as the "Bar-muda Triangle." I'd never been to either but was immediately struck by their down-home nature, which is a perfect antidote to too much enforced conviviality in the French Quarter.

First up was Vaughn's Lounge. The name of the place is spelled out in nickels pressed into the worn stone stoop.

Cinnamon Brown, Singer-Songwriter From Amsterdam Set to Spice Up the ...

Upon getting her feet wet in the competitive U.S. music scene, Cinnamon Brown envisions herself performing with Atlanta based, Hip-Hop sensation T.I., "I like his energy, lyrics and style," says Cinnamon.

Although she has penned songs for Universal Music Publishing, Cinnamon Brown feels that the time has come for her to go beyond Europe to share her gift with the world. Cinnamon Brown is the real deal -- her determination, infectious energy and passion will make her the next household name.

An impressive A-List gathering of entertainers, from Anita Baker, Bob Marley, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway to Busta Rhymes has influenced Cinnamon Brown.

When she's not writing songs for her debut CD or for Universal Music Publishing, Cinnamon Brown volunteers her time with young girls, empowering them to be leaders and to follow the beat of their drum -- not others.

The Futureheads vs The Maccabees, part two

He was in control, he was like the leader wasn't he – without being a tosser about it, he was like ‘if you want to do something it's gotta come through me'. Or ‘you've got an idea for a song, let's hear it – no, I'm not gonna start mic'ing that one yet ‘cause it hasn't got a big hook'.
BH: They were awesome 12-, 13-hour days and then he'd bugger off to Greece at the weekend to play a trance festival or play bass with The Orb in front of 30,000 people. And we'd be on the beach eating sandwiches…
(laughter)
J: But you wouldn't pick what vocals were used would you, he'd pick them. That's quite important…
BH: He can hear it from a different perspective to me – listening back to your voice it's not nice. You kind of hate it, all the little habits and inflections you don't want them to be in there, but actually those are the things that give you the magic.

Comcast Admits Paying Attendees at FCC Hearing

Comcast Corp. admitted yesterday that it paid people to attend a government hearing. Company critics say the freelance attendees were there to crowd them out; Comcast says they were merely saving seats for employees.

The five-hour hearing Monday at Harvard University was organized by the Federal Communications Commission to address the issue of net neutrality, a hot-button topic for those who think there should be minimal restrictions on Internet traffic.

The topic has drawn wide interest from college students, media-reform groups, and Internet companies.

An official at Free Press, a nonprofit advocacy group that has criticized Comcast for limiting the amount of data some of its customers send over its network, accused the cable company of "stacking the deck" at the hearing with the 30 to 40 "seat-warmers." An official at Harvard said dozens of real participants were left standing outside the auditorium with placards.

His widow from his third marriage Wende and his eldest son Chris headed the party of six.

He’s not the best, but Bush not worst president either

Many will debate Mr. Bush's place in history in the year ahead. If commentary from recent years is any indication, the consensus will not be good. Indeed, many will proclaim him to be the worst president of all time.

Such talk is silly for two reasons. First, pitting the presidents against each other in the search of some overall performance quotient is a horribly inexact science. Second, any assessment of Mr. Bush's legacy at this juncture can be nothing but tentative.

Most of us (including yours truly) are not history majors. Many people, including those who say Mr. Bush is the worst president of all time, could not even come close to naming each of the White House's 42 occupants. And if they can, far fewer still could spend more than five seconds talking about the accomplishments and records of guys like Millard Fillmore and Benjamin Harrison.
