| Malware writers exploring Software as a Service model
The business of writing, buying, and selling malware has become increasingly commercial over the past few years, but a new report from online security firm Finjan sheds light on just how mainstream the crimeware business has gone. Earlier this month, the company discovered a small, standalone application gathering data on over 8,700 servers, including web sites from 2,500 North American companies and a handful of sites in Alexa's top 100 ranking. Potential buyers were able to log into the malicious server hosting the data-gathering service and evaluate any given web site's size and Google Page Rank to decide whether or not the site's FTP information was worth purchasing or not. The concept of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is nothing new, but this is the first time anyone has organized the purchase of FTP login credentials, with additional tools available to help a buyer confirm he's making a smart purchase.

Spain Polarized Before Sunday Vote
Today, the vanquished Popular Party and its leader, Mariano Rajoy, still believe that they were robbed of the election and that the victor, Socialist Workers' Party leader José Luis RodrÃguez Zapatero, is an accidental prime minister who lacks legitimacy. Accidental or not, Zapatero embarked on a four-year program to liberalize divorce, marriage and other social laws, an agenda that deeply divided the country and prompted bitter clashes with the Catholic Church, one of Spain's most powerful institutions. On Sunday, Spanish voters return to the polls after an acrimonious parliamentary election campaign dominated by those same social issues, disputes over immigration and the flagging Spanish economy, and complaints about the Catholic Church meddling in politics. Zapatero and Rajoy, who launched bitter personal attacks and accused each other of lying during the campaign, are both seeking a verdict from voters on whether the 2004 election was a mistake.

Bioneers serving locally grown food to promote sustainability
When Kryssa Bowman agreed to cater this weekend's Northern Rockies Bioneers Conference, she had a lofty goal: Cook all the meals with ingredients grown or made within 100 miles of Bozeman. “I love challenges, so I was like, 'Let's make it work, even if I have to do just salad and meat,'" said Bowman, owner of Thyme Savors, a personal chef service. “The local farmers and ranchers, they deserve to have our business."Other than the salt and pepper, she has managed to accomplish her goal, creating recipes for four different meals that will feed 325 people each. In addition to being home grown, all of the food will be pesticide free and organic.Accomplishing that feat wasn't easy. Bowman had to design the menus based on ingredients she knew she could find in the area. She picked plums and apples from local gardens and a neighbor's yard.

Andy Oram Reports
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- It's an unlikely matter for the United States and other nations to lock horns over: the administration of names and numbers used to reach Internet sites. Andy Oram Reports 'SOCIAL WEB' HAS FAR TO GO, BUT MUCH PROMISE Andy Oram CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Two ideas, diametrically opposed in philosophy and approach, have seized the attention of Internet companies and technologists over the first few years of this century. Given that the century will be so long and we have barely started yet, it's hard to say which will turn out to be most important. One stresses classification, the other community. These two ideas are attracting both money and attention, but neither has yet borne fruit. Happy New Year, Everyone!
