House Holds Bush Confidants in Contempt; Republican Members Walk Out

The Republicans' unflinching brazeness presents a real teaching moment. Knowing they will lose the vote, the Republs in the House boycott the vote. The Administration refuses to enforce. "Politics is war by other means" is their motto. Democracy, rule of law, checks and balances, etc. are just words to garner legitimacy for elite rule.

(Dec. 10, 2007)--The UTSA Center for Distance Learning and Academic Technology received a $150,000 grant from the San Antonio Southside Independent School District (SISD) to develop a Web portal to offer online course content to SISD students.

UTSA and San Antonio-based BroadRamp Inc., a privately held venture capital-funded company, will partner on the grant project, which will include the development of SAT and ACT test-preparation courses, a high school algebra course and College 101, an introduction to college course designed to close the gaps in minority participation in higher education.

Google and PayPal collide at the checkout

Jon Kuhlmann has had a front row seat as that competition unfolded.

Kuhlmann, whose company Grapevinehill.com sells discount footwear, had been taking PayPal for years, largely to service the eBay Inc. customers that account for 80% of his revenue. And when Google Checkout came along he added that payment option to his eBay store and his own site.

But eBay, which owns PayPal, was having none of it. For the first few days we took Google Checkout for some eBay transactions, but that was quickly stopped by eBay, he says.

A year later, eBay was still banning Google Checkout, saying it is unproven. And Kuhlmann was on hand in Boston when Googles attempt to poke fun at that ban badly misfired.

Party crashing

Google invited merchants attending the annual eBay Live event in June to attend a Revolutionary War-themed party billed as a celebration of freedom of choice.

Ketamine to be re-classified

Ketamine is a general anaesthetic used for medical and veterinary purposes and the government is acting on a recommendation from the Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs to classify it.

Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell says while only a small number of people use it illegally, it can be harmful.

He says evidence show it is not an addictive drug but it is habit-forming and people can build up a tolerance to it.

Bell says the classification will have a small, but positive effect.

There will be even tighter controls around the storage of the drug and increased penalties for its importation, possession, manufacture, or supply for illicit purposes.

Associate Minister of Health Jim Anderton will still be able to be used as a prescription-only medicine by vets and doctors, but they would need to keep it in an "approved" locked metal or concrete cupboard or compartment.

BCS Championship game: Online ticket buyers risk getting sacked

Use a credit card or PayPal, which offer some protection and the potential for reimbursement.

Many sellers will include pictures of the tickets with their posts on auction sites or bulletin boards. Scrutinize the tickets for any inaccuracies or alterations, and cross-check the seat assignment with the map on the venue's Web site before you buy.

General plan report: Look forward, not back

The Citizens Advisory Commission consistently voted to recommend preserving the concept of city-centered growth and to protect agriculture from development encroachment.

If a majority of the committee membership were pro-development (which I would dispute), that bias is not reflected in the completed general plan update as it was recommended to the Solano County Planning Commission.

Fortunately, anyone interested in the proposed Solano County general plan update can form their own opinion regarding its potential effect on rural development. To access the general plan go online to www.solanogeneralplan.net.

By the way, I should disclose that I was a member of both the original committee and the reformulated committee.

Dion hints Liberals willing to let budget stand

Care to try and make your point without attacking his english (which is as good or better than Harper's french, IMO), his heritage, his physique, or other superficial and irrelevant things?

Can you do it?

Didn't think so.

Don't feel too bad....neither can the CPC. Their attack ads are all sizzle and no steak. And pathetic, to boot.

That's why your hero's party is basically in a tie with Dion's in the polls.

That's why Harper will never get his majority.

Thank goodness. Posted 19/02/08 at 1:52 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Kaliningrad Region

Therapeutic peat mud and highly mineralized water located deep underground are widely used in the region's health care services.

ECONOMY

Kaliningrad Region belongs to the group of regions with a low gross regional product (GRP). The region's geographic location and geopolitical situation, as well as its ice-free coastline and nearness to the Atlantic Ocean, have a strong influence on its economic development. On January 22, 1996, the President of the Russian Federation signed the Federal Law "On the Special Economic Zone in Kaliningrad Region," which grants special privileges to economic entities in the region. The creation of the Amber (Yantar) special economic zone was necessary in order to accelerate the region's socioeconomic development, provide favorable conditions for attracting foreign capital and technologies, and increase export opportunities.

E-waiter, where's my food?

Restaurants in Europe, the United States and Japan are testing technology that allows diners to order food directly off screens at their tables, instead of depending on fellow human beings to note their choices, sometimes grumpily or erroneously.

Companies that sell the "e-menu" technology argue that besides cutting costs, this approach has a novelty value that can lure younger customers and increase revenue with tantalizing photographs of meals.

The idea may be only the latest gimmick in a trade that is driven by consumer appetites and where fads help. But at least for now, it appears to be helping business.

In Israel, Conceptic, a privately owned start-up company, has already installed the technology in sushi bars, pubs and family restaurants.

O2: iPhone is our fastest-selling device

Ever since launch reports suggested the iPhone was selling poorly in the UK, carrier O2 has made sure to periodically let everyone know that the iPhone sales situation isn't as dire as it was made out to be. The company has also been sweetening the deal for iPhone owners by adding extra minutes and features to iPhone plans. According to O2's latest earnings report (covered by Fortune), the iPhone is the carrier's fastest-selling device, and it's getting high marks for customer satisfaction as well.

The carrier has proffered the iPhone as the reason why it had such a good 2007 holiday quarter. Sales were up 9.5 percent overall and the carrier attracted 483,000 new customers, including 276,000 new customers with contracts. O2 didn't release any specific sales numbers as part of its earnings report, but the carrier did say that the iPhone is its fastest-selling device in the UK.
