| As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere
RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs. The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks. "These Web pages are tremendously popular," Mochalski said. The services let users upload a file and then share a link, called a direct download link, in e-mails and Web forums for others to download the content.
Plaza cam is back
The Plaza cam is back. Visitors to www.ArcataPlazaCam.com can now see live video of the northwest corner of the town square via a Web-enabled camera perched on the Plaza View Stay balcony at Ninth and H streets, according to a press release. A separate web camera existed on the south side of the Plaza for several years, operated by a Web site design and hosting company. Alex Stillman, an Arcata City Councilwoman, is sponsoring the new camera. It uses her private DSL for Internet access. "I figure it's for fun," she said. Stillman said she decided to put it up after her daughter in the Bay Area said she was checking on road and slope conditions via Web cams to decide whether to go skiing. That conversation reminded Stillman of the old Plaza cam. The new camera will be great to view festivals and to see how busy the plaza is, Stillman said.

E-mail still ranks as top threat to U.S. industry
This isn't malware for the masses anymore," said Jeff Green, senior vice president, McAfee Avert Labs. "Cybercrooks have become extremely deft at learning the nuances of the local regions and creating malware specific to each country. They're not skilled just at computer programming - they're skilled at psychology and linguistics too." But with the skills evident in today's cyber crooks is authentication an answer and can learning how to better manage your mail help? The answer is yes on both points, but according to McAfee's Jeff Green, "We're in a constant chess match." IT-Business Canada reported last week Friday that the Quebec provincial police force arrested 17 hackers associated with running a one million-computer botnet that caused an estimated CAN$45 million in damage.
