| Sun backs Web 2.0 startups
Sun Microsystems has put its weight behind up and coming web 2.0 companies with the launched this week of a new initiative designed to provide UK startups with discounts on Sun technology and services. The Sun Startup Essentials programme, which was originally launched in the States, will help eligible companies purchase a range of discounted products and services, including Sun Fire x64 servers and Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads technology, according to the firm. Startups under the scheme can also rent discounted web hosting infrastructure from Sun partners Layered Technologies, NaviSite and NTT Europe Online, and gain access to free open source software including Sun's own. "They will also get free technical support – the idea is to help startups make good decisions up front so as their needs go up they can sustain higher traffic," said Sun's Juan Carlos Soto.

Israel broke law with use of cluster bombs in Lebanon: HRW
Human Rights Watch said Sunday that Israel breached international law when it bombed southern Lebanon with cluster weapons in 2006. A 131-page report "Flooding South Lebanon: Israeli Use of Cluster Munitions in Lebanon in July and August 2006", made available to reporters at the United Nations Headquarters, said that Israel violated international humanitarian law with hundreds of "indiscriminate and disproportionate cluster munitions attacks on Lebanon." Human Rights Watch said Israel had rained as many as 4.6 million submunitions, or cluster bomblets, across southern Lebanon - mostly in the final days of the war. The report's lead author, Bonnie Docherty, said the United Nations must investigate whether Israel deliberately targeted civilians with the munitions.

Belated Firefox patch coming for (another) protocol handling bug
Mozilla security chief Window Snyder says the "jar:" protocol handler issue that currently haunts Firefox will be fixed very soon in the next refresh of the browser. The problem (see previous coverage) is that Firefox's "jar:" protocol handler does not validate the MIME type of the contents of an archive, which are then executed in the context of the site hosting the archive. This can be exploited to conduct cross-site scripting attacks on sites that allow a user to upload certain files (e.g. .zip, .png, .doc, .odt, .txt). [ ALSO SEE: Firefox feature introduces danger ] On the official Mozilla security blog, Snyder explains the vulnerability and attack vector: Firefox supports the Java Archive URI scheme that allows the addressing of the contents of zip archives.

Tracy mayor Ives to seek re-election
TRACY Mayor Brent Ives has decided he wants to keep his job for another two years, so he has thrown his hat into the ring in a bid for re-election this fall and set up a rematch with slow-growth activist Celeste Garamendi. But the wild card this November could come down to Tracy City Councilwoman Evelyn Tolbert, who has yet to announce whether or not she's going to run. Late Thursday afternoon, in front of a small group of friends and family at the Great Plate in downtown Tracy, Ives announced his intentions to seek a second term as the city's mayor. He said he made the decision to run "a couple of weeks ago," driven by several challenges currently before the City Council, including dealing with a budget deficit while maintaining public safety, getting a youth sports park built, the redevelopment of downtown and creating a college consortium.

Barnsley 0-0 Chelsea
He still manages to get in a shot which Cudicini does well to block with his legs. This is good stuff from Barnsley. 43 min: A really strange match, this. Long periods of absolutely bugger all to report, then the odd burst of hectic activity. Of which this isn't one. Still, it's better than Middlesbrough v Sheffield United. Chewing tin foil while being shot in the face would be better than Middlesbrough v Sheffield United. Here, in the absence of fun, allow us to SEXX YA UP. "Short shorts are essential apparel for 2008," pants Russell Child. "Gone are the days of Peter Beardsley, Kevin Keegan and Joe Jordan. Football players are much more attractive now. Let Fernando Torres and Ronaldo lead the way." Not everyone, however, is in the mood to see football's sexface. "Can you please stop eroticising Joe Cole," pleads Julian Menz.
