Malware writers exploring Software as a Service model

The business of writing, buying, and selling malware has become increasingly commercial over the past few years, but a new report from online security firm Finjan sheds light on just how mainstream the crimeware business has gone. Earlier this month, the company discovered a small, standalone application gathering data on over 8,700 servers, including web sites from 2,500 North American companies and a handful of sites in Alexa's top 100 ranking. Potential buyers were able to log into the malicious server hosting the data-gathering service and evaluate any given web site's size and Google Page Rank to decide whether or not the site's FTP information was worth purchasing or not.

The concept of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is nothing new, but this is the first time anyone has organized the purchase of FTP login credentials, with additional tools available to help a buyer confirm he's making a smart purchase.

Your Comments : Interim PM tells world leaders at the UN, Why he did ...

Winston Peters doesn't have the ego-strength to back-down now... but hey he doesn't have the back-bone or substance to ever be a leader anyway... thank god - such a fickle small-minded man.... but maybe he could do something different for a change... who knows... stranger things have happened....

Winds shifting in the debate over education

Listening to Jones testify on HB 881, I am suddenly aware that, indeed, the center of gravity on the education debate has shifted. No longer are we stuck on inputs and debate about how one government can best grow another, which the input set chooses to define as "local control."

"It is a unique opportunity," Jones says of her bill establishing a state commission to grant charters, along with a fairer funding model. "This enhances local control by letting the consumer decide. To narrowly define local control [as] government monoply control does a disservice to Georgia." And to children who either drop out or struggle through bad schools that show no promise of improving.

Every School Every Thursday -- Des Moines East/North

Student council members will go around and collect the change from each classroom and place the money in a large container by the front office so students can see how much has been collected. This is not a contest, just a service project. The money goes to support children with leukemia and their families, as well as cancer research. This year's student council members are Jonathon Hyde, Morgan Dubreuil, Ryan Thammathay, Kelsey Ambrose, Olivia Bruek, Kevin Pham, Grant Smith, Breonna Harris, Alexis Larson and Manny Aguilar. Their teacher sponsors are Peggy Culver and Kim Jensen. The student council has already sponsored a plastic-bag recycling project and a food drive this year.

Scouts Honor Frank McNeill Sr.

He grew up in Bethesda (Presbyterian Church) and served in many positions as a young man and as a family man."

Burns listed the many roles that McNeill and his wife, Ann, have played in the church leadership.

He was active in the youth group and the Fayetteville Presbytery Youth. He was chairman of District 6, and vice president of the Presbytery Youth Council. Later, he served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, youth adviser, deacon, trustee, and an elder.

Burns said he will always remember McNeill standing on the front porch of the church, "sticking out his right hand of fellowship to welcome everyone coming to the church.

"I've used the word 'served' a lot, and not by accident," Burns said. "Because Frank has served many people and the community, I still seek him out for advice because he always approaches situations with an open mind and open heart.

New EU rules mean traditional Swedish vodka will not be allowed to be called simply vodka, in what ministers are calling a 'silly' regulation. Wallstrm laments lack of women named for top EU jobs (7 Mar 08) Sweden unhappy with EBRD head selection process (6 Mar 08) Man gulps his way out of drunk driving citation (28 Feb 08) New European rules on the labelling of alcoholic drinks were intended to clear up confusion over use of the word 'vodka'. Drinks known as vodka are currently made not only of grain or potato, but also of grapes, bananas and other produce. The new rules mean that labelling will have to be clearer, so that people have a better idea of what a particular drink containes. But the rules also mean that the traditional Swedish word for vodka - 'brnnvin' - will have to be accompanied by the words 'spirit drink'.

Nanopores That Can Recognize, Separate Proteins and Small Molecules

Nanopores, holes less than one-thousand the width of a human hair, are capable of isolating strands of DNA or therapeutic drugs from a solution, based mostly on the size of the pores. Now, a chemist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has created nanopores that can recognize and interact with certain molecules, actively controlling their movement across synthetic membranes. Results were published online Feb. 3 in Nature Nanotechnology. .

Sims says Sonics may leave, but NBA here to stay

RON SIMS HAS not talked lately with Clay Bennett, nor has he been in touch with the NBA.

But as the King County executive who endured stadium-extortion attempts from Major League Baseball, as well as the National Football League, he knows a little about sports business and the Seattle rich-guy crowd.

So when he says there's virtually no chance that the Sonics will remain in Seattle beyond the expiration of their KeyArena lease in 2010, the man has some credibility on the topic.

When he says he has met with members of three separate potential Seattle ownership groups, all known to the National Basketball Association, who said they are willing to buy a team and contribute to a new arena while seeking to retain the Sonics name, that also has some credibility.
