Israel Anglos - Internet Groups Weaving A Community Web

Jerusalem----April 22......An elderly widow, originally from Johannesburg and now living alone in Ra'anana, Israel notices one day that water has begun to pool on her bathroom floor, right behind the lavatory. As concern deepens to panic, she hurries into the hall of her Rehov (street) Ben-Gurion apartment building. Gazing down the corridor at two rows of her neighbors' closed doors, she remembers with irritation that none of them speak English, and her own Hebrew is almost nonexistent.

She lurches back into her apartment, boots up her computer and quickly types a letter to her English language e-mail group in Israel, asking for the phone number of an English-speaking plumber. She writes the words "Help! Plumber?" in the subject line of her letter. grabs her mouse and clicks "send."

Within 10 minutes, her mailbox fills up with the names and phone numbers of several English speaking plumbers, along with letters from two of the plumbers themselves.

Asus' 8.9″ Eee draws crowds at CeBIT

Mobile/Wireless News Fun Stuff Hardware Linux Energy efficiency - green Intel Microsoft Video Conferencing

Here in CeBIT 2008, crowds descended on Hannover Germany to see the latest technologies. Germany is certainly a lovely country but there's nothing lovable about the 5.60 Euro per gallon gas prices.

CeBIT is certainly one of the more unique conventions I've been to since everything is spread out over a square kilometer and it's like going to 10 mini conventions. While you get some outdoor air between the halls, don't expect any fresh air with all the smokers there. The temperature delta certainly makes proper attire a challenge because it's too warm inside and freezing outside.

Microsoft kicks off CeBIT tech fair with green message

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer speaks at a press conference at the CeBIT technology fair in Hanover. Ballmer called on the IT industry to reduce its carbon footprint as CeBIT, the world's largest tech fair, kicked off in Germany with a focus on climate change. .

Apple TV 2.0 update now available [updated x3]

Apple has released the much-anticipated 2.0 update of the Apple TV software. The update brings a redesigned interface to the set-top box, as well as support for SD and HD movie rentals, iTunes Store browsing and purchasing directly from the device, AirTunes capabilities, flickr photo browsing, and more. For a more complete look at the changes, read our feature article. The Apple TV 2.0 update is available now through the "Update Software" menu selection in the Apple TV's Setting menu.

Updated: The Apple TV 2.0 update currently offers 75 high-definition movie rentals, a new introductory movie, and unlike the version demonstrated at Macworld Expo in January does not appear to include a 1080p resolution setting. Apple's updating process requires at least six restarts of the Apple TV, three of which include progress bars showing that the update is currently underway, and concludes with the playback of a new movie that replaces the "wall of videos" Apple TV 1.0/1.1 introduction with a slightly different version.

Doris Goodwin on Obama's Borrowings

In the days since Gerald Ford's death, so much praise has been heaped on the late president's blanket pardon to his predecessor, Richard Nixon, that you'd think Tricky Dick was Jean Valjean. These magnanimous pronouncements are a preening exercise in cost-free generosity three decades after the fact. They reflect little or no consideration of the merits of the pardon itself.

No new information has emerged during the past 32 years that makes Ford's pardon to Nixon look any more justifiable; indeed, what facts have dribbled forth make it seem less so. (More on these later.) Nor can the pardon plausibly be considered an example of the bipartisan spirit for which Ford is justly, if too extravagantly, praised by Washington insiders. The pardon may have had the long-term effect of tamping down partisan warfare between Democrats and Republicans over a possible criminal trial (obstruction of justice would have been the likeliest charge), but when a Republican short-circuits prosecution of a fellow Republican, you can't call that bipartisanship.

Whitney Senior Center program in jeopardy

He drives his students to and from class almost every day.

"They want to still learn, but there wouldn't be any teachers," he said.

The Whitney Center encourages Somali elders to participate in the classes so they pass information to younger community members. The Somali Elders Council, which officially became an organization this month, credits its origins to the Opening Doors Building Bridges program.

"We started there," said Ismail Ali, chairman of the group. "We gathered there to discuss."

The group hopes to take the Whitney Center's outreach philosophy to a new level, by offering everything from establishing a women's group to making cemetery arrangements for Muslim families, Ali said.

Benefits

The group's success just an example of what other cultures bring to the area, Tasto said.
