| Purdue irritates best fans
Kelly Rostine and her Paint Crew friends were looking forward to a five-day camping/tailgating experience at Mackey Arena. With Purdue's 24th-ranked men's basketball team set to play tonight at No. 8 Wisconsin -- then hosting 11th-ranked Michigan State on Tuesday -- the student section, named for coach Matt Painter, can't wait. But about 40 Paint Crew members camped Friday afternoon outside Mackey were told by university officials that they may not spend the weekend at the arena. "They are not letting the students support the team," said Rostine, 21, a senior from Carol Stream, Ill. "If they are trying to kick us out for safety reasons, then what is the difference between us sitting (in the cold) for a football game or sitting outside for any other sporting event? "All we want to do is support our team.
Hillary wafts in like a blast from the past
Hillary Rodham Clinton's visit to Robstown Wednesday illustrated what many people find troubling about her campaign. Some Clinton critics, even Democrats, have feared she would carry on "politics as usual" in Washington, D.C., describing her as such a consummate politician that she has little credibility when talking about bringing change to our government. Wednesday's rally felt like old South Texas politics, complete with homage to some politicians who haven't held office for years and vintage music. While her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, is immortalized in "YouTube" videos created by current musicians such as Will.i.am (yes, that's his name) of the Black Eyed Peas, Robstown's Clinton audience took a trip down memory lane with a variation of the 1960s "Twist" and Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" from 1980.
Chow & Tell: Taste Buds at Blue Adobe Grille
Along with our dip, we chose a small cup of red chile pork posole soup with spicy mixes of roasted pork and hominy in a red chile broth ($5.25). The red chile pork posole could be an elixir for the ill in small isolated villages. Our server graciously brought us a sample of the green chile chicken corn chowder ($3.50). The chowder was thick and creamy enough to comfort our taste buds. Do you see a theme here? Staying true to the New Mexican cuisine, green/red chile is used in almost every dish at Blue Adobe. The lobster dip was delicious although we would have preferred to enjoy it with tortilla chips instead of the deep fried flour crisps. As for the soups, we liked the red chile pork posole better. The spices and flavor hit the spot. For dinner Jennifer picked the chorizo stuffed chicken ($16), which was a pecan-grilled chicken breast stuffed with chorizo, green chiles, fontina cheese and smothered with anamaretto mushroom cream sauce.

Pride in a pioneering dozen
Explore the role of volunteerism in community affairs. Start a scrapbook, poster or bulletin board display featuring African-Americans who have made a contribution to their communities. Find pictures, articles or editorials in the newspaper. You may want to divide the display into six sections and label the following: (a) Government (b) Education (c) Social Services (d) Civil Rights (e) Neighborhoods (f) Environment. When you discover an individual that interests you, do further research about their background and add the information to the collection. 5. Character education and service learning. If you have done volunteering (service learning) in your school or community, share your personal experiences and observations with your class. If you have not done any service learning, interview the director of a nonprofit agency or organization who uses volunteer help.
Community invited to learn about AIDS epidemic in Africa
You will have the opportunity to see an African child from a remote country in which AIDS runs rampant as you walk through a virtual African village.Through your journey, the child you're accompanying will be tested for HIV at the health clinic. Together, you will learn his fate. That's the setting for a half-hour walk this week through the gymnasium at Lodi's First Baptist Church. The child is real, but he won't be there with you. Nevertheless, through headphones (in English or Spanish) and photography, you will learn all about this child and his life in a land where AIDS is commonplace, and where children and their parents die at an early age.Called "Step Into Africa Experience," the audio tour is produced by World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to help them reach their full potential and tackling the causes of poverty and injustice, according to World Vision. Some 300 people from the Lodi area have already volunteered at least one four-hour shift to help organize the event, which will be held from Thursday through Monday, said Glen Barnes, an associate pastor at First Baptist, who is in charge of the Lodi effort.
Debate over malpractice ‘crisis’ comes to the capital
Whenever Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D,W,F-Manhattan, was mentioned the crowd booed and hissed. Reached at his office, Dan Weiller, Silvers press representative, gave a statement on the speakers behalf: We are examining ways to address doctors concerns, maintain the financial viability of the malpractice insurance system and ensure and improve patient safety. The Medical Society is arguing that following a 14 percent increase in insurance premiums in July 2007, most physicians in New York are now paying 55 to 80 percent more for their liability insurance in 2008 than they were in 2003, bringing the annual premiums for many specialists to amounts in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Adding to the problem they say is that physicians could face a 10 percent cut in their Medicare reimbursement on July 1 if Congress doesnt act to prevent it.
